Salmonella and pig ears – FDA & CDC Investigation

The FDA and CDC are working together to investigate cases of Salmonella that have broken out reportedly due to contact with pig ears. As of now, the FDA is recommended you cease purchasing and feeding your pet any pig ear until further investigation can be done into which brands are involved in the outbreak.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the infected product and due to this there is also a risk to humans who may have handled the contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands and any surface that may have been exposed to the product.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections. If you feel you may have been exposed and infected please contact your healthcare provider.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Pawnut Butter – Safe For Dogs!

🐾 We carry Xylitol-free peanut butter for dogs! 🐾

🤔 Why is that important and what the heck is Xylitol?

Simply put, Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is as sweet as sucrose but with fewer calories and causes very little insulin release in humans. As well as that, it has been shown to prevent mouth bacteria that damages the surfaces of teeth which means it is a very common additive to toothpastes, sugar-free gums, and other oral care products.

🤔 Why is this dangerous for your pups?

When ingested in increments even as low as 0.1 gram per kg of your dog’s body weight, it can cause insulin spikes from the pancreas resulting in dangerously low blood sugar levels. This is shown with symptoms including vomiting, weakness, trembling, and seizures. At higher dosages, massive liver destruction can occur which may lead to the death of your pup.

With all that said, it is extremely important to double check the ingredients in the foods in your home and be sure to keep anything not dog-friendly out of their reach!

🙂 Since so many pups love peanut butter, Green Coast Pet’s Pawnut Butter was created specifically for dogs. Xylitol-free, gluten free, and it includes flaxseed which is an excellent source of OMEGA-3!
